A collection of illustrations i have produced based on fashion and style. The first image was drawn in Flash whilst the latter two (a series i intend to create more of) were produced in Illustrator.

Every now and then i limit myself to using just black and white and a small amount of time to produce some quick illustrations. It's an enjoyable break from heavy accurate illustration, allowing much more freedom in their creations. The John Lennon picture was an experiment using type and my aim is to animate this in After Effects at some point.

Anyone with fond memories of the 80's loves Transformers and i am no exception. These images were all created in Flash and are some of my earliest illustrations. With the release of last year's blockbuster film and a possible two more films on the way, don't be surprised to find some more images of the robots in disguise here soon!

Similarly to Transformers, i also am a big fan of some comic book characters and illustrations. Apart from the Doctor Who picture, this set of images was created in Flash though obviously in two different styles to achieve the differing looks. The Superman illustrations were produced with very loose strokes with the brush tool to achieve a 'comic book' feel whilst the Batman image required alot more attention to detail to create a more realistic look.

These are a collection of images that are all in various stages of completion and were produced in a variety of methods. The Phoenix was constructed in Illustrator and then taken into Photoshop, whilst Kryten was created in Flash in a similar method to my Batman picture. Nightcrawler was a step away from vectors and made purely in Photoshop and is based on an original art piece by David Finch. I've always liked the concept drawings artists create for films and 2D work in general and this is my first real attempt at producing such an image. There's still a long way to go with it, but results so far are very encouraging.

In Depth: The Hobbit DVD

As a fan of fantasy literature and Tolkien in particular, the release of the Lord of the Rings boxset inspired me to conceptualise a DVD boxset for an as yet unreleased cinematic version of another Tolkien book. This project was initially designed for any of Tolkien's work, however it quickly became apparent that selecting the Hobbit was the best solution, especially given the recent rumours about an upcoming production. In creating this DVD, it allowed a widening of my knowledge in DVD authoring and creation, in packaging and allowed a demonstration of my abilities as an artist and designer.

As realism was an important factor for me, my design needed to be both original and complimentary of the existing Lord of the Rings branding. When the Hobbit is eventually made, a boxset containing all 4 films will be invetiable, therefore it can't look out of place when stood side by side with the trilogy of films.

By looking at the various book versions of the Hobbit and by looking at the inspirational artwork by artists such as Alan Lee, John Howe and Ted Naysmith. Using artwork based on the first edition of the Hobbit (that Tolkien drew himself) and by combining it with sketches and textures i created myself, I was able to come up with a design that was inkeeping with the current branding. Being my first real attempt at designing and constructing a DVD interface, i faced various hurdles and a steep learning curve. Despite this however, i think the concept i'm trying to convey comes across admirably.

In Depth: Bank of MTV

This was a brief set for D&AD by MTV to highlight what MTV might be if it wasn't just a broadcaster with the concept being centered around an object or experience. Said concept should capture and embody the spirit of MTV as a brand continuing to pioneer music & music culture. Insights into what has influenced the design and criteria for measuring its success had to be included. Its target audience were the young at heart who are always looking for a licence to create while any responses should be celebratory, shameless, witty, audacious and smart.

After going through various ideas such as MTV branching off into Air travel, delighting us with unique confectionary, styling us or our weddings with their individual touch and breaking into Formula 1, i came up with the idea of MTV becomming a bank and publishing their own currency. I liked the notion of having musical icons on notes that were as individual, brash and outrageous as MTV themselves. I also wanted to incorporate hidden codes, signs and symbols into the designs, making giving them greater depth and meaning.

With the idea in place i needed to know what areas of music i could include on my notes. I looked through the different genres of music from soul to rap and rock to punk aswell as looking areas such as music fashions, trends and lifestyles. In the end i opted for a pyschedelic note much inspired by Jimi Hendrix and promotional posters/artwork from the 60's for events, festivals and bands such as the Beatles and Jefferson Airplane. Aswell as the artwork style, i also looked into optical illusions to again try and add depth to the note and make the whole experience as trippy as possible.

My second note was based around MTV divas and the whole champagne lifestyle. I felt this was a more regal, V.I.P themed note and as such my design reflected this. Elements included champagne, diamond rings, tiaras and a limousine. In each of the notes i needed a substitute for the queen or the appropriate leading figure. Hendrix was used in the first note and the second needed an equally important figure, for this reason i chose Madonna as 'the queen of pop'. This served a secondary purpose as it allowed me to replicate the Madonna & Britney kiss on the note, but only shown in such a way when the note is folded correctly.

My finished designs came out better than i had imagined and i was particularly pleased with the illustrations i created for the psychedelic note and the main image of Madonna.

The BRN UK started life as an idea and quickly gathered support from UK AC Milan fans who wanted a site that was a little more personal to the UK scene. A core team emerged as the people behind the site (of which i was the designer) and from there on in the wheels were in motion. Initially, the BRN UK was set to go it alone as the 'Official UK AC Milan Web Site'. However, gaining the links needed to the club were near impossible for a small band of newcomers. What was needed was a group already well established with AC Milan, a formation that had incredibly close ties with the club, step forward the Brigate Rossoneri.

For those who aren't too sure who they are, when you watch an AC Milan match on tv and you see the Curva Sud full of banners, flags, posters, flares, people with microphones and P.A. systems, somewhere in there is the Brigate Rossoneri. There are several groups in the Curva Sud, but one of the biggest (if not the biggest) is the Brigate Rossoneri. Alot of the amazing coreography you see before matches is organised by them, they are steeped in history and have an incredibly close bond to the club. The Brigate Rossoneri president met with the editor of the BRN UK and a deal was fashioned, it was agreed that the site would become the 'Official UK division of the Brigate Rossoneri'. This fantastic opportunity meant immediate and easier access to season tickets, Coppa Italia tickets and Champion's League tickets.

In terms of design, i wanted to step away from the usual football fan sites you see and make something dynamic and extremely visual that reflected the amazing coreography often seen at AC Milan games. You can visit the site by clicking on the link below. This site will open in a new window.

Classic Car International is a site dedicated to classic cars & car parts from automobiles of the 1920s right through to today's contemporary icons. Based in Gran Canaria, it currently has a large number of classic cars on sale and more are being made available to us on a regular basis. It was important to have a design that echoed the classic status of the cars and still be functional to allow the owner to upload new cars when he needed to. Natural Soil is a new 100% organic liquid fertiliser that can be used for both commercial farming and individual residential purposes. Originating from Canada it's come across the Atlantic and is being sold here to distrubutors all over the country. I was approached to come up with a uniform design for both sites (Canadian & UK) and something that would be able to display a large amount of information which would be easy for viewers to access. Once the logo had been designed, the rest of the site followed quite easily and although mainly functional in it's design it's still quite eye catching. I was asked to create a concept for a microsite based on a joint campaign by McVitie’s Penguin & WWF. The campaign was to raise awareness of the penguin's valuable habitat in Antarctica and help raise funds for WWF’s Antarctic and Southern Ocean Programme. Special packs of McVitie’s Penguins helped promote the site and once there, users were given various pieces of information about penguins (such as their lifecycle), ideas for fundraising and details about the McVitie’s Penguin bar range. As the graphics and type for the fundraising pack were already completed, it was necessary to keep some of these elements in order to keep a continuity across the different media.

I wanted to keep the illustrative theme going that had been started with the bold type and penguin graphics used in the fundraising pack, so i set about creating my own illustrations for the penguin habitat. I wanted to emphasise the threat the penguin's environment faced and designed the site to show their habitat with visible limits. In the actual site, the 'island' the penguins are on would gradually shrink in size to again strengthen this message. All the illustrations were created in either Photoshop or Illustrator and put together piece by piece. In the completed site, the waves would move, the logos & icebergs bob up and down, the birds would fly, all of which would add subtle movement to the site but give that little bit of extra depth to make the user's experience more interesting.

Taurus Vinyl is a site i'm currently producing for an independant record collector who wanted somewhere to sell his personal collection that consists of over 5000 records! Having already come up with Taurus Vinyl as his ebay ID, it was just a matter of finding a logo that fitted his name. My initial design can be seen below and was a little too aggressive for the nature of this site. A more friendly logo was created and i set about incorporating this into a design for the site. Currently the shopping cart back end of the site is being implemented and should be on course for a near future finish.

The NADP (National Association of Disability Practitioners) is the professional organisation for disability and support staff in further and higher education. I was approached to come up with a new logo for them and set about trying to come up with a logo that connected the letters to show a sense of unity. This initial design was met with a warm reception but they were looking for something else. So i went back and came up with what was to be the accepted logo that showed a sense of equality in everyone. You can see the logo on the site by clicking on the link below. This site will open in a new window.

This was something i put together for fun, coming back to it now and again over a period of time. I always remember playing the original Bruce Lee game on a friend's Commodore 64 back in the 80's and after seeing it on an emulation site i decided to see if i could make it myself in Flash. Although not completely finished, most of the important elements are in the demo and it was enjoyable to see my Flash skills progress as the construction of the demo moved forward.

In Depth: Mission Impossible title sequence

With the recent success of modern versions of old T.V. series such as Dr. Who and film adaptations such as Mission Impossible, it is with increasing popularity that old T.V. classics are revamped and reintroduced to modern audiences. It is my intention to take such a series and contemporise it.

Going through various old T.V. spy shows such as 'The Man from Uncle', 'The Avengers' and 'The Saint' sparked a few ideas. In contrast however, studying the 'Mission Impossible' T.V. show generated numerous concepts and possibilities, especially given the regular release of big budget film versions of the show. Aswell as this, because the show has already been 'contemporised', to do so with in a T.V. version would not now be such a dramatic change for audiences to accept.

'Mission Impossible' contains alot of consistent elements throughout the series, such as the briefing, where immortal words such as 'Your mission should you decide to accept it' and 'This message will self destruct in 5 seconds' are heard. Other elements include the appartment/dossier scene where the Impossible Mission Force are selected, the fuse wire title sequence, the elaborate plans to accomplish their missions and the gadgets/face masks they use.

Researching existing title sequences and leading figures in this field led me to probably 3 of the most important individuals in the history of titles. These were Kyle Cooper, Saul Bass and Maurice Binder. With each having their own unique style, it became a generous pool of creativity with the many layered and manipulation approach from Kyle Cooper, the quirky cut-outs and 'simplistic' design from Saul Bass and the visual effects used in the James Bond sequences from Maurice Binder.

For my own concept i wanted it to use the visual elements from the exisiting opening sequence, such as the fuse, the stark red & black colours and the typeography used but in a contemporary manner. I filmed the lighting of several fuses and sparklers to give me a good back catalogue of shots. To compliment the stark nature of the flame i wanted a cloudy and atmospheric background, something that was continuously moving. For this i filmed ink flowing being injected into water. The next step was finding the actors to play the parts. I kept some parts the same, but changed others to keep the links to the past but to also introduce modern touches. Finding the right actors was difficult in that it couldn't really be a film star or someone instantly recognisable from another T.V. Series. However, i made my choices and proceeded to put together the title sequence.

My idea was almost a combination of the stark simplistic approach from Saul Bass and the multi layers of Kyle Cooper. For the theme music i wanted something very edgy and upbeat that would blend with my fast editing and 'jagged' feel. I was fortunate enough to know someone who could do this and he came up with a great track that fit perfectly. In the end everything came together and i think the end piece is incredibly visual and contemporary but still has the important ties to the original. I was asked by a local design studio to put together a motion graphic for Castrol. The purpose of the video was to promote a new distributor programme that they were advertising in conferences in Brazil & Dubai and it needed to be mainly corporate in look and feel. Working with an art director, a design was produced that had both visual elements such as the text effects for the introduction to each main section and the 3D element at the beginning of the video and maintained the corporate styling. The motion graphic was produced in After Effects with some elements created in Illustrator.
